MUKAH: The Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) reflects the concern of the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the well-being of the people.
Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said the initiative clearly helps the people, particularly in easing their financial burden.
“This is also to ensure that every Sarawakian is not left behind, especially in terms of welfare, and has the means to purchase basic necessities.
“Therefore, it is hoped that SKAS recipients will use the assistance wisely and make the best possible use of it,” he said when speaking at the launch of the SKAS 2026 programme for the Tellian State Legislative Assembly (DUN) at Medan Mall on Tuesday (March 10).
Royston explained that SKAS comprises three categories: single individuals, households, and senior citizens, all of which have received an increase in assistance.
He added that the aid will be distributed to recipients in three phases in March, May and November, with all phases scheduled before festive seasons.
At the same time, he stressed that SKAS assistance cannot be converted into cash.
“Strict action will be taken against traders who fail to comply with the conditions or misuse this facility.
“As for recipients, they may be blacklisted from receiving assistance in the future.”
Meanwhile, he also presented Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to 43 recipients from across the Tellian constituency, totalling RM603,000.
He expressed hope that the grants would be utilised effectively together with the local community.
