KUCHING: Continued investment in structured training programmes is vital for the development of rhythmic gymnastics in Sarawak, says Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGYMA) president Johnny Tan Seng Hock.
He said the Intensive Training Camp for the Sarawak SUKMA Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) team, held in Kuala Lumpur from Apr 12 to 18, is a crucial step in elevating athletes’ performance ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
“The main objective of the programme was to enhance the athletes’ performance level through structured and intensive training,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today (Apr 12).
The camp involved nine participants, comprising one Sports Development Officer (SDO), one team manager, one coach, and six gymnasts.
According to Johnny, the main objective of the programme was to provide a more systematic and focused training environment to enhance the athletes’ performance levels.
He added that the camp also aimed to strengthen technical abilities, improve physical conditioning, and refine the artistic and execution aspects of the gymnasts’ routines.
Throughout the week-long programme, the athletes underwent structured training modules that focused on fundamental techniques, the refinement of individual and group routines, and regular performance assessments conducted by the coaching team.
Johnny said the exposure to a more competitive training environment was also valuable for the gymnasts’ development as they continue preparations for SUKMA.
“The programme also provided valuable exposure for the gymnasts to train in a more competitive environment,” he said.
He expressed hope that similar high-performance training programmes would continue to be implemented in the future to ensure Sarawak athletes remain competitive at the highest level.
