MIRI: The RM2-billion Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant project has reached a 45 per cent completion rate as of March 2026, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s energy transition.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the project is a vital component in strengthening the state’s power infrastructure to ensure long-term resilience and reliability.
“The Miri CCGT Project is an important step in strengthening Sarawak’s power infrastructure. It will support a more reliable and efficient energy system for the state,” he said during a site visit to the facility here on Friday (Apr 24).
Designed as a 500MW facility, the plant utilises advanced combined-cycle technology to provide more efficient power generation for the Sarawak grid.
The project is currently on track for its targeted completion by the end of 2027.
Julaihi also commended Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) for its commitment to human capital development, noting that the project is actively bridging the technical gap for local Sarawakians.
Currently, Sarawakians make up approximately 36 per cent of the total contractor workforce, involving over 250 individuals across professional, skilled and semi-skilled roles.
“I commend PETROS for its continued efforts in developing local capability. These initiatives are important in ensuring more Sarawakians are equipped to support and sustain our energy infrastructure,” Julaihi added.
He further noted that such initiatives create meaningful employment and contribute directly to the state’s economic growth.
To date, PETROS has deployed over 30 Sarawakian employees to the project.
The company has also integrated 20 young engineers into on-site On-the-Job Training (OJT) programmes and 88 technicians engaged through structured technical competency collaborations.
The delegation, which included Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, and Permanent Secretary Datuk Jafri Lias, was hosted by PETROS Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Janin Girie and Vice President for Capital Projects, Kidd Enau.
The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) reaffirmed that close coordination among stakeholders remains a priority to ensure the timely and safe delivery of this strategic infrastructure, which is essential for Sarawak’s energy security.
