SEBUYAU: Sarawak’s gas-bearing geological formations may extend beyond the state’s proven reserves towards the Natuna Basin, potentially opening up new prospects for future gas discoveries.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg told reporters this after officiating at the opening of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge here today.

He said while proven gas reserves currently extend to Balingian, geological evidence suggests the formations continue westward across Sarawak towards the Natuna Basin, part of which lies within Malaysian territory.

“At the moment, proven reserves extend to Balingian. But before that, who knew there was gas in Balingian?

“The geology extends across western Sarawak and continues towards Natuna. Part of the Natuna area also belongs to Malaysia,” he pointed out.

On the ongoing discussions between Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) over the management of Sarawak’s gas resources, Abang Johari said negotiations were progressing and should deliver mutual benefits.

“They are still in discussions. Both parties should benefit, but it should not be one-sided,” he said.

The Premier also revealed that Sarawak intends to deploy satellite technology to study underground geological formations, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s understanding of its sub-surface resources and identifying new energy prospects.

He said the technology would provide more comprehensive geological data to support future exploration and long-term energy resource planning.
