KUCHING: River and sea users, particularly operators of small boats, have been urged to exercise extra caution and postpone their journeys where possible as worsening haze continues to reduce visibility.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said a notice had been issued about two weeks ago advising boat users, operators and owners to take additional precautions when travelling on rivers and at sea.
He said poor visibility caused by thick haze could increase the risk of collisions between vessels.
“If possible, postpone your travel plans on the rivers or waters,” he said when met by reporters after an event here today (Aug 30).
Henry said the situation in Sarawak was becoming increasingly unsafe, particularly in Kuching, where the Air Pollutant Index (API) had reached 299.
He said the hazardous conditions posed health risks and called on the public to reduce outdoor activities, particularly those involving river travel.
“This is something beyond our control, and that is what makes it dangerous,” he said.
