KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will progressively implement a flexible hybrid teaching and learning approach for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate programmes beginning in the September 2026 semester.
The approach combines digitally enabled learning with purposeful on-campus engagement, with lectures delivered through interactive online platforms while laboratory sessions, practical work, workshops, field-based activities and collaborative projects continue on campus where appropriate, UNIMAS said in a statement.
The initiative builds on the university’s continued investment in digital-learning infrastructure and academic support, aimed at enhancing flexibility for students and staff, strengthening academic continuity during unforeseen disruptions, and supporting more sustainable campus operations while maintaining the quality and student experience central to a UNIMAS education.
The hybrid approach will be implemented according to the academic and professional requirements of each programme, with faculties and centres providing students with detailed information on teaching arrangements, attendance requirements, timetables and programme-specific guidelines before the start of the semester.
“Hybrid teaching and learning enables UNIMAS to provide a more flexible, resilient and future-ready educational experience,” said UNIMAS vice-chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit.
“We will continue to ensure that every programme preserves the meaningful on-campus learning, practical experience and academic support our students need to succeed,” he said.
The Centre for Flexible Learning (CFlex) leads the preparation of UNIMAS academics for hybrid teaching and learning, organising targeted webinar series on practical digital education to guide lecturers in utilising the university’s learning management system and designing intuitive course materials, with emphasis also placed on developing self-instructional resources for self-directed, self-paced learning.
The initiative also supports the university’s efforts to make effective use of digital technologies, reduce unnecessary travel where suitable, and promote responsible resource use across the university.
