MIRI: Police have identified all seven children involved in a fight captured in a 44-second video that went viral on Facebook, with an investigation now underway under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the children, comprising boys and girls aged between eight and 13, were identified following a police report lodged by the victim’s father on Sept 17.
The report was lodged at about 2.40 pm, with the investigation being conducted by Insp. Rayhan Albert.
According to Farhan, the incident took place at about 5 pm on Sept 16 at an open piece of land in front of the house of one of the children involved at Tudan Desaras Phase 6, Miri.
The seven children were known to one another and frequently played together.
He said the incident stemmed from an argument after one of the girls, identified as the victim, allegedly used abusive words towards another child.
The incident subsequently escalated, with other children becoming involved and the victim being kicked and pushed.
He said the child seen being assaulted in the video did not suffer any serious injuries.
The incident came to public attention after a 44-second video showing the altercation was circulated on social media.
Police urged members of the public not to speculate or amplify sensitive issues surrounding the incident, warning that unverified information could cause unnecessary concern within the local community.
“Members of the public are advised not to make any speculation or viral postings concerning sensitive issues that may cause unrest among the local community,” Farhan said.
Police also encouraged members of the public with information about criminal activities to come forward and lodge a report at the nearest police station or contact the Miri police at 085-433730.
Farhan said the police appreciated the community’s concern for safety and the wellbeing of residents in Miri.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing hurt.
