KUCHING: The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) is holding its annual open day today.

Programme venue is the animal shelter in Kota Sentosa, Mile 7 (near Pizza Hut block) from 10am to 2pm.

The programme aims to increase animal adoption and awareness of adopting healthy, vaccinated and neutered animals.

Among the activities that will be held include animal adoption, walk a shelter dog, education and information about how to prevent dog bites, SSPCA merchandise sales, donation drive, dog licence registration, and donation drive.

Members of the public can also get the chance to meet Miss World Malaysia 2018 and SSPCA ambassador Larissa Ping.

In 2017, 485 animals were adopted from the shelter and the total average of the monthly population at the shelter was 250 animals.

“In 2018, the adoption rate dropped drastically due to the rabies outbreak and fear of the disease,” it said in a statement yesterday.

To date, only 47 animals have been adopted from the shelter and the population has increased to 600 animals per month.
