SARAWAK’S aviation sector continues its upward trend, recording 112,625 aircraft movements and 9.07 million passengers in the first three quarters of 2025, which is a 15 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said air cargo operations also strengthened, rising to 49,895 tonnes from 42,381 tonnes in 2024.

“Sarawak continues to see strong growth in air connectivity, both domestically and internationally, which will further enhance our economic opportunities and tourism potential,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly today.

He added the state received 51 weekly international flights and an average of 551 weekly domestic flights from other Malaysian states, with Kuching remaining the main gateway.

“Other airports saw strong activity, including Miri (144 weekly flights), Sibu (79), Bintulu (48), Mulu (seven), Limbang (three), and Lawas (two).

“Within Sarawak, the Rural Air Services (RAS) maintained an average of 684 weekly flights connecting major towns and rural areas, helping to improve connectivity across the state. Miri handled 190 weekly flights, Kuching 164, Sibu 69, and Bintulu 59,” he said.

On international connectivity, Lee said it is being enhanced with the launch of the Haikou-Kuching scheduled charter service by 9Air, while the Shenzhen-Kuching charter by Loong Air is scheduled to commence soon.

“The ministry continues to work closely with airlines and partner agencies to secure more direct international routes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lee said Miri Airport continues to experience strong demand, having handled 2.4 million passengers since 2019, exceeding its 2 million design capacity.

“Preliminary design work for a major expansion began in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by December 2025.

“The upgrade will expand terminal capacity to 4 million passengers, add additional aerobridges, and improve both landside and airside facilities,” he said.

Lee said the airport upgrade will enhance passenger experience, streamline operations, and strengthen Miri’s role as a key regional hub, supporting Sarawak’s overall connectivity and economic growth.
