MIRI: Firemen’s tasks are not confined to firefighting or extricating victims at accident scenes.

They also go out of their way to rescue pets or wild animals in difficulties.

This afternoon, firemen from the Lutong fire station and several villagers from Kampung Batu 4 Kuala Baram helped rescue a stranded baby whale that was found washed up on the beach, here.

Acting Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee, responding to an emergency call around 12pm, despatched a team from the Lutong fire station to the beach.

“The four-metre long baby whale was spotted washed up on the beach near Kampung Nelayan Batu 4, and upon seeing the stranded animal, villagers immediately alerted Bomba,” he said.

It took the rescuers more than 30 minutes to push the whale back into the sea.
