KUCHING: A woman unknowingly named guarantor for her uncle’s alleged debt fears a confidential police report leak after unknown individuals obtained the document and continued issuing threats against her.

Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau Chief, Milton Foo, said the complainant first lodged a police report in May 2023 after receiving threatening calls demanding repayment of a debt she said she had no knowledge of or involvement in.

“The issue concerns a debt allegedly linked to her uncle, for which she was made a guarantor without her knowledge,” he said during a press conference at the party’s headquarters today (April 18).

According to the complainant in a letter to Foo, the harassment resumed on April 9 this year when she received a WhatsApp message from an unknown foreign number demanding payment and warning that her family would continue to be harassed at home and at her workplace.

Fearing for her safety, she lodged another police report at the Padungan Police Station on the same day.

However, the situation escalated on April 15 at about 11:50 am when she received another message from a local number claiming awareness of her police report and demanding that she meet in person to settle the alleged debt.

The sender also attached an image of the police report she had recently filed.

Foo said the incident raised serious concerns about a possible breach of confidential information, as police reports contain sensitive personal details, including identification numbers, home addresses and workplace information.

“The report was meant to protect her, but it appears to have reached unknown individuals instead,” he said.

The complainant said she now fears for her safety and that of her 65-year-old mother, who is often alone at home, adding that the threats had caused significant emotional distress and anxiety.

Foo later questioned how a confidential police report could have ended up in the hands of unknown individuals and called on authorities to investigate a possible information leak.

He said the case raised broader concerns over whether victims seeking police protection could instead become more vulnerable if sensitive details from official reports were exposed.
