MIRI: The crime index in Miri has recorded an 18 per cent decline from Jan 1 to Mar 23 this year, compared to the same period in 2024.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu disclosed the statistics during the Miri police headquarters’ monthly assembly on Tuesday. Also present was Miri deputy police chief Supt Nur Ashyikin Abdullah.

According to Alexson, a total of 99 index crime cases were reported in Miri between Jan 1 and Mar 23, 2025, compared to 120 cases in the corresponding period last yearn — marking a decrease of 21 cases.

However, narcotics-related offences saw a sharp increase, with 343 cases recorded and 355 individuals arrested in the same period this year. This represents a rise of 124 cases and 116 arrests compared to 219 cases and 239 arrests in 2024.

Commercial crime cases also surged by 57 percent, with 108 cases reported in 2025 compared to 69 cases in the same period last year.

Despite the increase in cases, the total financial losses from commercial crimes decreased by RM2.3 million (32.5 per cent), amounting to RM4.9 million this year compared to RM7.2 million in 2024.

Meanwhile, road accident cases saw a 7 per cent decline. A total of 750 road accidents were recorded from Jan 1 to Mar 23, 2025, compared to 808 cases during the same period in 2024.

ACP Alexson urged the public to continue cooperating with the police by reporting any criminal activities in their neighbourhoods.

“As the festive season approaches, I also advise those leaving their homes for holidays to inform the police so that security patrols can be arranged in their areas,” he said.

He further reminded road users travelling during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration to drive cautiously and prioritise road safety.

During the assembly, ACP Alexson also took the opportunity to congratulate police officers and staff who received certificates of appreciation for their outstanding commitment and performance.

He expressed hope that such recognition would further inspire officers to maintain their high level of professionalism and productivity.
