MIRI: The Sarawak Customs Department (JKDM) recently busted a drug trafficking syndicate following two major raids that resulted in the seizure of illicit narcotics valued at over RM1.2 million.

A total of 7,072 grammes of ecstasy pills and 1,012 grammes of ketamine were confiscated, revealing a sophisticated modus operandi employed by the traffickers.

Director of Sarawak Customs Norizan Yahya said that in an operation conducted on Mar 14, officers intercepted two courier packages at a facility in Eastwood Valley Industrial Park, Miri.

The first package was found to contain 3,613 gms of Ecstasy and 1,012 grammes of ketamine, hidden among food products.

This haul was valued at approximately RM653,971. Investigators noted that the drugs were cleverly concealed, indicating a calculated effort to evade detection.

The second raid at the same location yielded another 3,459 grammes of ecstasy, valued at close to RM577,653, also packaged alongside edible goods.

This further underscores the traffickers’ strategy of disguising illegal substances within seemingly innocuous deliveries.

Drugs seized during the operations.

The investigations revealed that the syndicate primarily utilised air courier services to transport drugs from Malaya to Sarawak.

Packages were often directed to unoccupied addresses, making it difficult for authorities to trace the recipients.

Both cases are currently being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
