DARO: About five hectares of forest fire remain to be put out near the Igan ferry point along Jalan Matu–Igan as firefighting operations entered the seventh day on Monday (Apr 13).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the fire had affected about 35 hectares in total, with 30 hectares already extinguished.

The blaze involved bush areas and oil palm plantations belonging to villagers, and had spread close to Ladang Sinong Igan.

“Extinguishing works were carried out using portable pumps, forest pumps and hose lines, with water sourced from nearby drains.

“Three excavators were also used to clear affected areas and contain the fire,” Bomba spokesperson said.

A total of 15 firefighters from Daro, Sarikei, Mukah and Tanjung Manis stations were deployed, assisted by police, Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel and plantation workers.

However, operations were hampered by the lack of communication coverage, limited open water sources and the absence of phone networks in the area.

The operation, located about 76.8km from the station, was stopped at 5.30pm due to fading daylight and will resume.
