KUCHING : The registration approval of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has been hailed as a great achievement by the state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) political studies and governance programme lecturer Dick Lembang Dugun, who made the comment said: “GPS is now one of the legitimate and strongest entities in ‘Bumi Kenyalang’ after taking into consideration the disparity in the opposition party, especially Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), after the party’s election recently.
“In addition, it can be used as a platform for all the people in the state comprising various racial groups to fight for their rights.”
He added the approval of GPS’ registration also symbolised a new chapter in the history of the independent state-based coalition as it prepared for the 12th State Election (PRN12) scheduled in 2012. Dick Lembang pointed out that the approval of GPS’ registration also highlighted the maturity of the democratic system in Malaysia after the 14th General Election with the freedom to set up political parties or associations under the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.
