MIRI: A man was killed and another injured when their fishing boat capsized in a river near Rumah Mekar, Sungai Putat, Asam Paya today.

Emergency responders from the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 11.22 am.

By the time rescue personnel arrived, the injured boat operator and his deceased companion had already been brought to the jetty by local villagers.

Firefighters assisted in transporting the victim’s body to shore alongside police officers.

The injured man, identified as 27-year-old Jeansher Bunsu, sustained head and arm injuries after being struck by the propeller of their Yamaha 30 HP inflatable boat.

He was taken to Miri Hospital for medical treatment.

His companion, Vincent Patrick, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Miri Hospital and handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to initial reports, the two men were on their way upstream along the Baram River for a fishing trip when their boat suddenly became uncontrollable and capsized.

Both were thrown into the water.

Villagers from a nearby longhouse, who happened to be in the area, rescued the pair and helped them navigate downstream to Rumah Mekar’s jetty, where emergency services were alerted.
