KUCHING: The upgrading of the Pending jetty serving Kampung Muhibbah is nearing completion, with about 90 per cent of the works finished and only 12 to 13 metres of the walkway remaining.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the project, which began in February, is expected to be completed by Aug 24 as scheduled, subject to favourable weather and river conditions.

“God willing, it can be completed on time — or perhaps it will just take a little more time if it cannot be finished by then,” she told reporters during a site visit today (July 18).

Nancy said the remaining works involve two bays, each leading to a staircase, with a combined length of about 12 to 13 metres.

She said the jetty serves as the main river crossing for residents of Kampung Muhibbah and Kampung Pinggan Jaya travelling to Kuching for work and school, eliminating the need to make a lengthy detour via Samarahan.

The RM600,660 project is being implemented by the Sarawak Rivers Board, which took over the project in April 2024.

It replaces a jetty that collapsed on Sept 5, 2023, cutting off access for about 200 residents, including students, boat operators and nearby workers who rely on it daily.

The upgraded facility is intended to fulfil the board’s mandate under the Sarawak Rivers Ordinance 1993 by providing a safer river-crossing facility for the local community.
