SERIAN: Sarawak Day should be celebrated across the state as a manifestation of unity, identity and appreciation for Sarawak’s historical journey.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman, John Ilus, said the annual celebration is more than just a commemorative event, serving instead as an important platform to strengthen public awareness of Sarawak’s history and constitutional rights.

He also proposed that the Ministry of Education consider producing a dedicated history textbook focusing on Sarawak Day on July 22, 1963, to help younger generations better understand the state’s history and identity.

“Sarawak’s history should be properly documented and taught more comprehensively so that the people, especially the younger generation, understand the state’s identity and struggle,” he said when speaking at the Semarak Hari Sarawak 2026 programme in Kampung Triboh, Serian, on Saturday.

John also reaffirmed that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to pursuing Sarawak’s rights as enshrined under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said among the state government’s key priorities is to regain authority over the education and healthcare sectors to ensure more efficient service delivery and better meet the needs of Sarawakians.

John also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) for its continued commitment to disseminating information on government policies, programmes and initiatives to the people.
