Sarawak Laksa

KUCHING: Sarawak famous dish, Laksa, has become a favourite among the people in China, and may see potential buyers from the republic.

Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Cheng Guangzhong said during the First China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai last year, the laksa booth was one of the well-patronised.

“More than 60 Chinese traders and buyers came to the Sarawak Laksa booth to discuss future cooperation,” he said during the Chinese New Year Lunar Reception at Imperial Hotel last night.

He said the popularity of Sarawak Laksa in China shows that the cooperation between China and Sarawak will truly benefit people from both sides.

“The second CIIE will be held from November 5th to 11th in Shanghai this year. And we welcome high quality products with competitiveness to enter China’s huge market of 1.3 billion consumers.

“I’m a little bit worried though, what shall I do if China consumers buy out all the Sarawak Laksa and I end up not finding any in Kuching,” he said to huge applause.

He also said 2019 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, and during that period the relationship had rapidly developed.

“In 2018, China and Sarawak had witnessed close high-level exchanges with concrete results. The Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and other high level government officials paid successful visits to China last year, and a few important agreements and MoUs were signed,” he said.

“In 2018, we witnessed so many important occasions in China-Sarawak collaboration, including the photo exhibition, ‘Building A Better Future Together’, the first electric city bus in Sarawak, a joint language centre by UCTS and North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power,” he added.

He noted with much joy that this year also marks the 70th Anniversary of the founding of China, and China will host the second “Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation” and the second “China International Import Expo” both of which show China’s willingness to open its market and share its development opportunities with the rest of the world, including Malaysia.
