SIBU: New Era University College (NEUC) in Selangor will set aside RM350,000 over the next seven years to support outstanding students from Sarawak who pursue further studies there.
The ‘Giving Back to Society, Nurturing Talents’ scholarship programme amounts to RM50,000 a year from 2026-2032.
“After discussion and deliberation, NEUC has decided to set the award amount at RM5,000 per person, meaning the annual amount of RM50,000 can benefit 10 Sarawak students,” said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong Chairman, Wong Ching at a press conference in the Central Market here today.
He thanked NEUC for authorising him to allocate the scholarship annually to Sarawak students.
Earlier, he participated in the distribution of free mandarin oranges to hawkers, in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, organised by the SUPP Sibu.
Among those present were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng and SUPP Youth Central Chairman, Kevin Lau.
According to Wong, who is also Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) Deputy Chairman, scholarship applicants must enrol in a course at NEUC and meet the requirements.
He said the minimum requirements to apply for the scholarships for degree courses are as follows: UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) graduates must achieve 5Bs, and a minimum of five credits for SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) graduates applying for Foundation courses.
These two conditions are set by Ministry of Education (MoE), he said, adding the closing date for applications is Feb 28.
He said NEUC has long been concerned about talent cultivation in Sarawak in line with the Sarawak Premier’s directives on education policies.
The establishment of this special award, he explained, further demonstrates the University College’s practical support for Sarawak students pursuing advanced studies in an institution of higher learning.
“We hope the scholarship will alleviate the financial burden on parents and help more ambitious young people in Sarawak to achieve their university dreams, so that they can contribute to Sarawak after graduation.”
