MIRI: Tourism, Arts and Culture assistant minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin wants the immigration process on Visa-On-Arrival (VOA) for travellers from China and India to Miri be speeded up.

Speaking to reporters after attending a briefing on the matter at Sungai Tujoh Immigration checkpoint here yesterday, he said an efficient VOA process would help boost tourist arrivals to the city.

Lee peeks through the car’s window as he greets travellers from Brunei who are passing through the Sungai Tujoh Immigration checkpoint.

“I want a solution to reduce the waiting time and speed up the procedures,” he reiterated.

Lee added that both travel agents and immigration officials should have better understanding of the issue.

“Do not complicate the process,” he urged.

VOA is an effort by the federal government to help boost tourist arrivals during Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

It is only given to tourists from China and India who enter Malaysia via Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

During the first seven months of this year, Sarawak recorded 4,694 tourist arrivals from China and 11,827 Indian tourists.
