BINTANGOR: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is being enhanced to equip students with versatile skills that meet the demands of the job market, especially the industrial sector.

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the Ministry of Human Resources developed the TVET Intake Unit System (UP_TVET) as the main channel for TVET course intake throughout Malaysia through two methods of new student intake, namely Perdana Intake and continuous intake throughout the year.

He said that as of December 31, 2024, there were 1,345 TVET institutions in Malaysia covering more than 1,200 public institutions in 12 ministries, 24 state government institutions and 652 private institutions.

“Entrance into TVET programmes increased from 166,577 in 2022 to 212,022 in 2024, with overall enrolment increasing from 394,976 in 2022 to 436,285 in 2024. The employability rate of recent graduates reached 94.5 percent.

“Through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is actively developing TVET by emphasizing the well-being of the people, increasing income, education and development, as well as strengthening strategic collaboration between TVET institutions and industry to improve skills and technological knowledge,” he said.

He said this at the opening ceremony of the EKSPO and Sarawak Education Office Open Day organised by the Meradong District Education Office 2025 at the Chen Ling Mei Hall, SMK Kai Chung, here yesterday (Aug 16).

He added TVET opens up opportunities for students to further their studies in the field of skills.

As such, he suggested that students master Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills as an added value, as well as strengthen their command of English as the second official language in Sarawak which is important for communication, especially in global companies, to be more competitive in the job market.

In conjunction with the EKSPO and Meradong District Education Office Open Day 2025, Ding also presented Certificates of Excellence to 41 Meradong District SPM and STPM Graduates of 2024 who achieved outstanding results.
