UNIMAS holds 10-day cadaveric workshop

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to strengthen its role as a one-stop centre for medical education and research with the launch of a 10-day course, the UNIMAS Cadaveric Workshop 2025 on Sunday.

The workshop held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UNIMAS brings together participants from Malaysia and ASEAN countries and entails comprehensive cadaveric training in advanced otology implants, endoscopic skull base surgery, rhinology, temporal bone dissection, and head and neck surgery.

The course is chaired by Sarawak HEAR President, Prof. Dr Tang Ing Ping, with guidance from experienced facilitators from both local and international institutions.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, officiating at the opening ceremony, praised the programme for its regional impact and its contribution to building a skilled healthcare workforce.

“This workshop marks an important step in our shared efforts to enhance surgical training, especially for our young surgeons and registrars,” he said.

Dr Sim also highlighted that over the ten-day workshop, participants would be exposed to a broad range of ENT procedures.

“Over the next ten days, participants will gain hands-on experience in otology implants, endoscopic skull base surgery, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, temporal bone dissection, head and neck surgery and open skull base surgery,” he said.

He also emphasised Sarawak’s growing expertise in the field of otology.

“We are pleased that the workshop begins with the Advanced Otology Workshop where nearly 200 patients have benefitted from advanced otology technologies,” he added.

He went on to highlight the significance of collaboration in improving regional medical practice.

“This regional collaboration is essential as we continue to share knowledge, build expertise, and explore new opportunities for clinical research,” he said.

Dr Sim also took the opportunity to thank the event’s industry sponsors, adding “My sincere appreciation also goes to our industry partners MEDEL, Hearlife, Medtronic, Storz, Zeiss, Ummi Surgical, Humedical, Demed and Sanofi for their support in making this workshop.”

Meanwhile Ahmad Hata said the event was a proud moment for UNIMAS.

“We are truly proud to host this workshop which brings together local and international experts, alongside young surgeons eager to learn and grow in their profession,” he said.

He highlighted that Sarawak’s pioneering work in otology services began since 2012.

“Since the start of our otology implant services in 2012 in Sarawak, we have helped nearly 200 patients regain their hearing, with technologies such as the Bonebridge, middle ear implants, cochlear implants, and even the auditory brainstem implant,” he said.

Running alongside the workshop was the launching of Chronic Rhinosinusitis Awareness Day aimed at educating the public and to promote better understanding of sinus related health issues.
