BETONG: Contractors involved in new road construction projects are urged to avoid using very old machinery for their work, as it often leads to frequent breakdowns and unnecessary delays.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stressed the importance of reliable equipment when speaking at a gathering at Rh Kelimbang in Penyulok on Wednesday (June 19).
“Frequent breakdowns of old tractors, excavators, and other machinery waste valuable time in repairs or waiting for spare parts,” he said.
The gathering, attended by Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu and Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) representative Dr Cassidy Morris, marked the launch of the earth-breaking work for upgrading the Penyulok/Nanga Penebak/Ulu Penebak Road in Ulu Layar.
Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the RM15.3mil project, expected to take 18 months, will transform the 4.829km road into a JKR-modified R1 road complete with solar-powered street lighting.
He noted that frequent machinery breakdowns could also cause the public to question the contractor’s commitment to timely project completion.
He assured that JKR, responsible for overseeing the construction, would maintain strict monitoring.
“The department will not hesitate to terminate contracts of those failing to adhere to the work plan, scope, and schedule. This is to prevent projects from becoming delayed or critically delayed.”
He added that delays not only affect the beneficiaries but also lead to public dissatisfaction with the government and local representatives.
Uggah also urged the community, particularly landowners, to avoid letting minor issues hinder the construction process.
“Resolve any issues with your JKR office, or consult your elected representatives before taking any extreme measures.”
In his speech earlier, Dr Rapu highlighted that the road upgrade is part of the government’s continuous efforts to enhance rural infrastructure.
He also reminded contractors to adhere to the work scope and complete their projects on schedule.
