SARATOK: Police has arrested a lorry driver for driving recklessly and suspected of being under the influence of alcohol yesterday (Jul 29).
The incident happened at around 5.10 pm when a crime prevention patrol team (RCJ) spotted a rigid lorry parked along KM419 of the Pan Borneo Highway, near the Saratok junction.
As the team approached to conduct an inspection, the driver suddenly moved the vehicle and turned into Saratok junction.
The team tailed the lorry from behind, and while on Jalan Feeder Saratok, they noticed the lorry being driven dangerously and ran over a road sign on the left side of the road.
Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said the vehicle eventually stopped at a petrol station in Saratok town, where the 48-year-old driver was detained for reckless driving and suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
“He was brought to the Saratok traffic police dtation for further investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) and Section 45(c) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
Section 42(1) pertains to reckless and dangerous driving, while Section 45(c) relates to driving under the influence of alcohol. Both offences carry a fine and a jail term, upon conviction.
Mathew added that the case had gone viral on Facebook after dashcam footage surfaced showing the lorry being driven in the middle of a two-lane road.
