KOTA SAMARAHAN: An unemployed man with a history of drug and criminal offences was arrested for allegedly stealing telecommunication cables early yesterday morning (Aug 4).

He was picked up by a crime prevention patrol unit in front of a tyre shop at Midway Crescent at around 1.30 am.

Kota Samarahan police chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the 27-year-old was stopped for inspections after he was behaving suspiciously.

“Body checks found nothing illegal. However, a vehicle search led to the discovery of a bundle of wires and a wire cutter in the back seat.

“The suspect was then taken to Kota Samarahan police station for questioning and further action.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to stealing the cables alone using a Perodua Viva belonging to his wife,” he said.

Police also seized several types of telecommunication wires, a Perodua Viva and a wire cutter.

Background checks found that the suspect has four prior records — three under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and one under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Damataries said the suspect, who tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, is being remanded for four days until Aug 8 to facilitate investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
