KUCHING: The United Kingdom (UK) is looking to enhance its collaboration with Sarawak in renewable energy, education, and high-tech industries as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties with Malaysia.
British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, said these areas formed the backbone of his discussions with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy call to the latter at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today.
He said that cooperation would focus on four key sectors: high-tech manufacturing, education and human capital development, digitalisation, and renewable energy.
“We see protecting the environment as a priority, alongside supporting green economic development and strengthening the energy transition agenda,” he told reporters after the courtesy call.
Ajay noted that Sarawak’s ambitions in renewable energy align with the UK’s global commitments, creating new opportunities to work together.
He added that the UK-Malaysia relationship extends beyond the capitals of London and Kuala Lumpur, with regional ties such as those involving Sarawak forming a vital part of the partnership.
“The historic links between our two countries provide a strong foundation to explore new opportunities that will bring mutual benefits to the people of both nations,” he said.
The discussion also covered English language education, vocational training, higher education, and efforts to raise Sarawak’s profile in the UK to attract more tourists, students and business ventures.
Among those present were British Political and Economic Counsellor, Rebecca Carter; Foreign Policy Adviser, Rhys Jackson; UK Regional Director for Climate, Energy and Nature in Southeast Asia, Sarah Love; Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sarawak Regional Office’s Director, Fenny Nuli; and British High Commission’s Government and Protocol Liaison Officer, Iman Hamdan.
