KUCHING: The flood mitigation project at Taman Desa Wira has recorded solid progress, with Phase 1 already 60.47 per cent completed as of Aug 25 — about 13 per cent ahead of schedule.

According to a statement from the Batu Kawa State Constituency Service Centre, a site visit was carried out together with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and project consultants.

Deputy Premier cum Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian was also present during the visit.

“For Sarawak in 2025, even if we have funding for projects, it is crucial to have good contractors.

“Otherwise, we will end up with too many sick projects — severely delayed, causing inconvenience to the public, and increasing financial costs,” it said.

The RM14.5 million Phase 1 contract, which began in Nov 2024, includes a 1.4-hectare dry pond with a storage capacity of around 40,000 cubic metres — equal to about 12,000 water tanker trucks.

It also involves upgrading 2.5 kilometres of reinforced concrete drains and culverts to strengthen the township’s drainage system.

Looking ahead, the Service Centre noted that Phase 2 of the Taman Desa Wira flood mitigation project is now open for tender, with submissions closing on September 24.

The Service Centre added that this next phase is crucial for ensuring long-term flood protection for residents in Taman Desa Wira.
